No Barriers For Love!

Real love knows no barriers since it’s a matter of heart. The real love is not constrained to a specific person or sect or community neither it constrains lover with any boundaries. After digging out dirt of selfish pursuit’s stream of such love flows endlessly and the creeper of such love germinates from the fertile field of heart and it spreads without any ambits encompassing every possible space and bearing fruits which surpass the taste of the nectar and these fruits infuses anybody who taste them, with similar capacity to love.
I am sure you would be wondering what type of love is this. And what are these fruits? How does one get it? The great scriptures describe seed of such amazing fruit bearing creeper as Bhakti Lata Bija. This seed is sown in the heart of a person who has already well cultivated this creeper. And the fruit of this tree is called as Bhakti. Bhakti is art of pleasing God and science of elevation to spiritual sky by keeping our thoughts,words and actions favorably disposed for the cause of Supreme. Bhakti or devotion to supreme has capacity to satisfy our all desires to love and to be loved.

Srila Prabhupada says the process of Bhakti is sublime and easy. It is sublime, since it directly puts one in contact with transcendence. Moreover, it is easy, since any neophyte can practice it in any given time, place and circumstance. In Bhakti, the spirit or bhava is more important than the thing we do. The process of bhakti is nonsectarian, since it incorporates identifying ourselves in relationship with Supreme divine truth and acting on the plane of that identification by taking guidelines from the revealed scriptures of any bonafide faith in the world. The term ‘bhakti’ can only be used for the relationship between the living entities and the supreme truth; since that relationship is unaffected by the destroying factor of time unlike any other relationship of this world. Bhakti not only allows, but also encourages relationship in this world, based on the platform of that original relationship with supreme. The more selfless attitude we have in these actions, more is the level of purity of our Bhakti. And more the level of purity of Bhakti, more contentment we find in our hearts. Scriptures state such pure bhakti has capacity to satisfy our ever-increasing desire to love and experience the bliss of being loved by someone.
In Bhakti, “why’s” are more important than “what’s”. However great a thing we may do, if it is driven to satisfy our ego then it is not Bhakti. However, simple and small a thing we may do, if it is done for sheer pleasure of the supreme Lord, then it is Bhakti.

One may be a business magnet, or sport star in limelight, or a supermodel on ramp. In the process of bhakti, there are no barriers. (check out such examples from below site with so many articles and link containing my own in specific :))

One may be a dedicated monk living in monastery and taking the serious responsibility of enlightening others and offering one’s body mind words as a token of gratitude for what he is receiving from past sages in his tradition, and his beloved Lord. Eat Pray Love [And Perfect]




Those who read the sojourn of Elizabeth gilbert, ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ (The New York Times Best Seller list for 187 weeks) but could not actually translate to their lives, those who saw Julia Roberts starring ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, but fumbled somewhere in the sequence, please pay attention. While I am designing this in dim moonlight of of night, The moon of Lord Chaitanya too has already appeared on the horizon to help us solve our dilemma. I was busy designing this poster. We are commemorating the appearance of Sri Chaitanya, and this is the poster for this event.

Scriptures presents, the root cause of our problems is our separation from God. And solution to all the problems is to reconnect with him, technically called -Yoga.
The process of Yoga is made all the more simple by Lord Chaitanya, it constitutes something which any normal person will love to do.
   
The great vaishnava poet Lochan das Thakur has described Lord Chaitanya as Keval Anandkand (simply Joyful), and the process given by him to reconnect with God is also simply Joyful. The process is, eat sanctified delectable food, sing melodious mahamantra and try to love the divine couple by rendering practical service unto them, the success is assured. By chanting, dancing and feasting we get mercy of Sri Gauranga and Sri Nityananda. And by their mercy we can attain love of God- which is perfection of Yoga practice.

Celebrating Women's Day


My very dear mother Srimati Radharani,

As my writing journey is gaining momentum, I find myself pondering over fuel of topics to drive my imaginations and refer the maps of the scriptures to serve my reader passengers.

As I was contemplating on my next topic yesterday, it suddenly struck me to write on the women’s day and no wonder, I decided that You will be the highlight of my article, since You are the prime of all forms of feminine nature, emblem of all wonderful feminine qualities to please the supreme masculine form of Sri Krishna. People talk of woman empowerment, feminism, etc., but they don’t know that here is the feminine form unto whom even the supreme absolute truth, Krishna, bows down. As I was thinking, I didn’t exactly know the date of the woman’s day, so I left that topic to consider later. When today morning I was standing in the meeting room with all my colleagues, one of my colleague, Ijaj, was chatting with his friends on his smartphone. When I peeked a little, I saw him pinging – “Happy Woman’s Day‘ – to his friend. It clicked me that You want me to write this article today itself! So here I am immediately at Your service.


I remember my very first day and class I attended with devotees, when I was invited to morning program at the student centre near my college. The speaker started singing Mangalacharan prayers and he arrived at the sloka,
tapta-kanchana-gaurangi    radhe vrindavaneshvari
vrishabhanu-sute devi    pranamami hari-priye

I stumbled at the word ‘Haripriya’, who is Radharani who is soooo dear to Hari among all his devotees and other living entities. I asked questioned the speaker at the end of his talk, “Can you please tell me about Radharani?” The topic of the class was “Ascending From fear to love” and my question was quite irrelevant to the topic and it was totally unexpected from the newcomer coming for first time to go into topic of Krishna and his esoteric devotees. So the speaker (Krishna Kishore Prabhu  :-)) told me that he was unqualified to speak. Others were mildly giggling. I couldn’t actually understand why he answered like that. You were kind of complete mystery for me. But now I understand my disqualification.

Then Your festival of appearance came and devotees would sweetly sing the Radhikashtakam prayers. I was determined to get Your mercy, to know and please you. I learnt it by heart. It was the first devotional song I memorized. In our apartment, there was Your picture in Your form as the deity of ISKCON Vrindavan, with the mahamantra printed on it. That form was so sweet; I would chant most of my rounds meditating on it. And I cherished the desire to at least one day in my life, to dress and worship Your this beautiful form in Vrindavan.


In youthful age surrounding temptations are very strong. But I thought in my heart that here are You, most qualified[Sad kaladi pandita], possessor of all virtuous qualities [Sad Gunali Mandita], compassionate[Karuna Bharite] and beautiful and this is only feminine form in my life I want to live for and serve primarily . I was protected, please protect me throughout my life. I heard Radhanath Swami in his class. One boy asked him a question “It’s said ‘Behind all successful males there is a female’. Then who is the female behind all the brahmacharis and you?” Maharaj’s impromptu reply was ‘Srimati Radharani’. You are behind all of us to nourish our devotional service.

Now after spending some time in Bhakti, I have taken things to be granted and I sometimes slip from the level of purity which is expected from me, I pray at Your lotus feet to please protect me from the pitfalls and let Your loving devotional service be the only goal of my life. 



Oh Dear mother, Varshabhanavi devi,
Most Celebrated female of divine glory.
At your lotus feet I am,
Offering my petty life story.

With little borrowed devotion,
Connection to your kins is my only qualification.
Seeing your pure devotees,
makes me understand a little about purification,
But deep in my heart still there is a commotion.
Within lurking desires of enjoyment and tiny devotion
Laying in doubts and apprehension,
Passing days in anxiety and desperation.

In forgetfulness you, O’ mother,
I am like a lonely fawn, lost in forest
Suffering and bewildered,
In remembrance of relation with you.
In shade of your shelter,
Our eternal mother,
Life is much smoother.


Please grant me your remembrance always and allow me to render service purely at your lotus feet throughout my life. May I be able to please you one day!

Abstinence or Indulgence


The morning Guru Puja Aarti in Radha Gopinath, Chowpatty temple is always an exciting spiritual activity and I always long to attend it. Not only the meaning of this prayer touches my heart, but the melody and sincerity in singing swipes away the layers of indifference and rekindles deep sense of gratitude in my heart for what I have got. Devotees close their palms in respect, gently dance in swami steps and sing in unison. As the kirtan crescendos, it evokes spiritual emotions and the participants are deeply absorbed and mad in dancing on the tunes of Hare Krishna (I too join the dancing rave). The bliss on each face is indescribable. I often tell my friends, who often join me to visit the temple, that if there was some satellite which could indicate the happiness of the parts of the Mumbai city with colours of different intensity on the map, the area of the Chowpatty temple would be most bright. 

Most of the attendees are the resident monks of this temple. Following the vows of celibacy and dedication, these people have joined this mission of compassion, giving away their high-salaried jobs to share the divine message to as many as possible. They live a simple life, sleeping on the floor on straw mats, wearing white drabs or orange clothes, sharing common facilities in the temple. What surprises most people, is how they can remain out of marital ties and follow abstinence throughout their lives?

The Twilight series written by Stephenie Meyer has brought the topic of abstinence in limelight. (I have not read the book but got to know about it). This book has sold over 100 million copies and some critics consider it so popular that it has done the unthinkable – knocked Harry Potter off his pedestal as prince of the young adult genre! The twilight is a series of books presenting the love story between a vampire (Edward) and a teenage girl (Bella). This book carries influence of the beliefs of author who is a devout mormon.The vampire actually refuses to indulge with Bella before their marriage to protect her and her human virtue. Some critics say abstinence has never been romantic (they have coined the phrase ‘abstinence porn’ for it) except for in Stephenie Meyer’s four-book Twilight series. But most of the reviewers and commenters say it’s unrealistic and less likely to happen in the real world which is so much filled with lascivious vibrations broadcasted overtly through various media.

I too would have agreed with them, had I not seen the monks in monastery of the Hare Krishna temple. Mere Abstinence (not only physical, but from even deliberating on such thoughts) seems difficult and boring, when covenants of religion are applied externally and theoretically. But when I see the monks, I realize that for them it’s not unrealistic and theoretical, but natural and practical. More than mere abstinence, it’s their indulgence in the daily spiritual activities like attending mangal aarti and other prayer sessions, reading, hearing, cooking, cleaning, dressing and worshipping the beautiful forms of the Lord and sharing this with others; practically doing everything with the Lord in the center of their activities makes it an idyllic setting for even outsiders to take refuge in from the daily trifle issues of life and find meaning and purpose in life. The smile which blossoms on each face after visiting a temple affirms this fact. It also testifies the sincere efforts of Radhanath Swami for making this place as it is today and being an ideal example of love, sacrifice and dedication for others. Every part of this temple and every devotee connected to this temple carry profound influence of his teachings and instructions and this fact doesn’t remain unnoticed.  

The beautiful forms of temple deities, prasadam delicacies, melodious kirtans, aromatic odors of incense or flowers, and warmth of love and care of fellow devotees makes it absolute ‘indulgence’ for all sensory faculties, making it easier to abstain from any other agitating temptations, if not impossible. I indulged in writing this article since I could not abstain from appreciating the abundant bliss floating in the Chowpatty temple hall during my favourite Gurupuja prayers and other daily festivities.

Expressions of Superlative Love


Today is Valentine’s Day – the most celebrated day for lovebirds to express their love for each other. Lovelorn majanoos wooing for lailas is no uncommon sight today. In fact, so many love songs of Bollywood sing the story of the unrequited love. And such love stories and examples could invariably be found in every corner of this world. Most Indian movies make their business with story of two star crossed lovers with their feuding families, their songs or soliloquies in separation and ultimately their phenomenal union. No wonder, young lads growing with these stories dream of their Juliets and lasses like Cinderella eagerly await for their princes. And the corporate world is always on their toes for such opportune moments to cash in on people’s emotions by endorsing and promoting days like these (and being a software developer of an e-commerce shop, I can certainly vouch for this!).

Real Love

Sages and seers of truth of various traditions, however, define love as life meant for pleasure of the beloved, unconditionally and uninterruptedly. To quote HH Radhanath Swami – “Love means to serve. And to serve means to please.” It is selfless in nature. Such love reaches its complete perfection when the beloved object is Supreme Lord. In true love, the lover loves not only his/her beloved but everyone else connected to the beloved. When love is reposited in Supreme Lord, such love is naturally manifested for all living entities as they are also connected with the Lord. Because of such love, great prophets like Jesus, Mohammad or my very dear Srila Prabhupada could surpass bodily limits and fight against so many obstacles to express their compassion to all living entities. And there are countless examples of such personalities in every single genuine tradition round the globe.

Mundane Love

But that which is portrayed as love in the modern times is limited to superficial bodily attraction,   and with ultimate desire for consummation (often, in unlawful and irresponsible way). The authoritative scriptures label this as plain lust. There is an easy way to understand this fact. The spoken or written words permeate the level of consciousness or intent of one’s heart. There is no dearth of poems, haikus and messages on love, exchanged between couples on this day. One can easily get a glimpse of the superficiality in the modern-day love from study of these texts. Most of these texts generally speak of selfish desires to be in company of other for some mental or social happiness or gross desire for physical enjoyment (you just need to listen to any bollywood love song to convince yourself of this). Since this blog is not meant for writing movie songs, I would skip citing examples in this regard. Sometimes, passionate lovesick heroes talk of sacrificing life if beloved is not attained. But such frustrated sacrifice of life seems much despicable, when compared to a blissful life of sacrifice for the pleasure of the beloved.

Expressions of Pure Love

To understand the nature of the true love we have to study lives of realized souls in loving devotional service to Lord who were completely selfless and free from any tinge of false ego, their beautiful poetic opuses, written compositions which were realized to them. In my little study of their literature I found it imbued with superlative form of love for Lord, higher than anything seen or heard about love in this world, testimony to their intense feelings of belongingness to the Lord.
 These literature are not just mental imaginations or intellectual juggleries for cheap recognition, but pieces of heartfelt, truthful realizations. Without fail, these texts charm me every time I read them. These literary master pieces have been a great source of inspiration in my spiritual life and it won’t be an exaggeration to say that my devotional life sustains itself thanks to such texts. One can easily understand the depth of their love from their compositions. In comparison to this love (even in textual way), mundane love appears just as broken pieces of glass pales in comparison to diamond.

In essence, if we want to be an actual connoisseur of true love and the associated bliss, we should take inspiration from these realized souls and should not settle with anything less offered by mundane love of this world. For only that can sooth the core most desire of everyone’s heart – to love and to be loved.

 O Lord Hari, it is not to be saved from the dualities of material existence or the grim tribulations of the Kumbhīpāka hell that I pray to Your lotus feet. Nor is my purpose to enjoy the soft-skinned beautiful women who reside in the gardens of heaven. I pray to Your lotus feet only so that I may remember You alone in the core of my heart, birth after birth.”

“My mind cannot turn from Śrī Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet, even for a moment. So let my dear ones and other relatives criticize me, my superiors accept or reject me as they like, the common people spread evil gossip about me, and my family's reputation be sullied. For a madman like me, it is honor enough to feel this flood of love of Godhead, which brings such sweet emotions of attraction for my Lord.”

“O Lord, I am just like a puppet in Your hands. So if You have brought me here to dance, then make me dance, make me dance, O Lord, make me dance as You like.”

“May I be born again even as a worm, so long as I may remain Your devotee. I have no desire to be born as a Brahma averse to You.”

 “The Supreme Personality of Godhead said to the brahmana: I am completely under the control of My devotees. Indeed, I am not at all independent. Because My devotees are completely devoid of material desires, I sit only within the cores of their hearts. What to speak of My devotee, even those who are devotees of My devotee are very dear to Me.”

The Killer Smile


Now-a-days, I find myself increasingly cautious sending emails or pinging my friends on chat messengers. This is not because I’m worried about privacy or security, but the dangers of misinterpretation. Occasionally, I’ve messed up my relationship with others because of reckless choice of words and inconsiderate presentation thoughts. Written communication is considered to be a serious form of communication. It’s archived, allowing us to revisit it in the future. But it’s limited, since it lacks the aid of one’s body language. Small grammatical or spelling mistakes can altogether change the meaning of sentences. And clarification of the written things may not be asked or available immediately. In the history of Peshava kings in India, a lady, Anandibai, reworded the letter of Raghunathrao, initially bearing the words ‘Narayanrao la dharave’ (meaning ‘capture Narayanrao’) to ‘Narayanrao la marave’ (meaning ‘kill Narayanrao’). This led to the death of Narayanrao. By this, one can understand the gravity of the written communication.

The use of the emoticons and smileys over the internet has really made it possible to incorporate feelings or mood in a few key strokes. They are extremely popular and are literally everywhere. You just can't avoid them. Instructions or critique with a smiley conveys it in a much lighter note, which could have otherwise risked feelings of provocation, enmity or worry. Someone appropriately said “A smile confuses an approaching frown”. You may want somebody to act in a certain manner, but don’t want to push it on him/her. Or you may be unsure about authenticity of what you say or you may want to tell, and at the same time hide, just add a smiley and it’s all right. (These are all the reasons where I used or received smileys in my chat history.) A famous comedienne Phyllis Diller once said “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.”

On reflecting further I found, in our lives too, there are lot of difficulties, uncertainties and ups and downs, which can make us completely hopeless or pessimistic. But the Lord has a unique plan for each one of us. When in my life I came across such things and went to Lord to complain or to get a justification, I was disarmed by the sweet smile of Lord, which made problems seeming so tough to endure like trifle which could be easily overcome. I got a feeling as if he knows everything (which he does anyways!), and is orchestrating the things to just pull me closer to him. The mild smile on the face of the lord not only is drop dead gorgeous to attract ones heart but it kill’s inner demon of anxiety too. I got a new ray of hope and understanding that Lord is eternal, I am eternal, the relationship between us is eternal and nothing of this world is matters beyond it, which allowed me to be equally serious in rediscovering and cultivating my relationship with him in troubling times too. 

And Srila Prabhupada confirms in Srimad Bhagavatam 3.28.32.
“The entire universe is full of miseries, and therefore the inhabitants of this material universe are always shedding tears out of intense grief. There is a great ocean of water made from such tears, but for one who surrenders unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the ocean of tears is at once dried up. One need only see the charming smile of the Supreme Lord. In other words, the bereavement of material existence immediately subsides when one sees the charming smile of the Lord.”
Putting my own experiences in a small composition...

I stagger and fall
I halt and crawl
With my wicked nature
Often I lose a brawl

It seems so difficult,
A losing chase,
High ideals of devotional service
How do I embrace?

In such a state,
I stand on a bifurcated road,
One side, your smiling face,
On other side, glimmer of Maya’s abode.

But I try to remember words, my masters have told,
Hidden behind your smiles are treasures of bliss untold
And the glimmer of Maya what unfolds,
Is an ugly reality and relations are so cold.

With some faith I aspire to take
Few more steps,
To be closer to you
To be your pet, to be your mate.

May my mind dwell in courtyards of the Siddha Bakula tree!

I have been thinking of writing this post since long. It's about a place/tree – Siddha Bakula in Puri, Orissa – which, I was longing to visit ever since I came to know about it. But when we visited Jagannath Puri, in June last year, I made it a point to visit Siddha Bakula, along with my friend Premanand. Actually, it was the last day of our yatra excursion in Puri. It was about noon, and we were hungry. But, going for lunch meant not being able to spend much time at Siddha Bakula. As I had been struggling with my chanting for last few weeks, I was in urgent need of some inspiration; a place, where I could contemplate and pray, to improve in quality of my chanting in times to come. Depending on Krishna for our lunch, we eventually decide to go there.

Brief History of Siddha Bakula: Siddha Bakula is the bhajana-kutir of Haridasa Thakur, where he daily chanted 3,00,000 names of Krishna (Practically more than 20 hours a day). Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu requested Haridasa, "Remain here and chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. I shall come here daily to personally meet you. Remain here peacefully, and look at the Chakra on top of Lord Jagannath's temple and offer obeisances. As far as your prasadam, I shall arrange to have that sent here." In order to provide shade for Thakur Haridasa, Sri Chaitanya planted a teeth cleaning twig, used by Lord Jagannath. All of a sudden, it grew up and appeared as a great shade tree. Rupa Gosvami recited ‘Lalitha Madhava’ and ‘Vidagdha Madhava’ under this tree to Sri Gauranga and his followers. Sanatana Gosvami, during his stay in Puri, lived here with Haridasa Thukur. This is where Haridasa Thakur left his body here and Lord Chaitanya danced in ecstasy holding in his hands his sacred body.

In due course of time, to construct Lord Jagannath's Rathayatra cart, the ruling Gajapati Maharaja of that time, ordered his officers to cut down this tree. The next morning, the royal officers found the tree hollow and thus returned without cutting it. The main branch of the tree is petrified (became like a stone), to the touch. This is the part that was transformed, so the king would not take it.
                                                                                                    
Importance of visiting Holy Places: In this age of Kaliyuga, in all major religions of the world, chanting of Lord's holy names is practiced as the very essence of spiritual life. The process of chanting purifies one’s heart and evokes experiences of ecstatic feelings of devotion in his relationship with the Lord in his perfected stage of chanting. The holy names, when chanted purely, have spiritual potency beyond the jurisdiction of material factors of time, place and circumstances. Similar spiritual potencies are also invested in certain places, on account of residence of Lord himself or that of spiritually perfected souls. And to access that spiritual potency and store it in the core of hearts (to access it later, in times of our need), is the main purpose of going to such holy places.

Our Visit & A beggar’s appeal: Hence, we were determined to access the mercy available at Siddha Bakula. Along with Premanand, I chanted there for a few hours. Being in the extremely spiritual potent place paid off. We found ourselves deeply absorbed in the sound vibration of the Holy Names, which doesn't otherwise happen so easily. Our intense prayers to Srila Haridas Thakur were to bestow his mercy upon us, to be able to relish the nectar exuding from the chanting of the holy names, to develop taste for chanting. We also got special Mahaprasadam of the presiding deities at that place :-) to fill our empty bellies.

Thereafter, whenever vicious thoughts distract me during chanting, I try to think of Siddha Bakula and Haridas Thakur. In remembrance of them, I feel, just as a pauper proud of his shack may feel on visiting a billionaire’s mansion –completely humbled! I realize how insignificant and tiny is my desire to chant the holy name attentively and purely. In such a mood, the begging for mercy becomes very easy. I heard HH Radhanath Swami saying in one of his lectures, “We have to beg to Krishna while chanting every mantra. We have to pray – I don't have any taste in chanting; please give me taste. We have to beg to get taste in chanting.” Haridas Thakur was most affluent person in terms of taste for chanting the holy names. Lord Chaitanya named him as "Namacharya", which means, "Acharya of the holynames". I pray to him and it works beyond imagination; since, in spiritual life, remembrance itself carries the same spiritual potency as that of the object of remembrance. Undulating waves of thought in my mind get settled and I get strength and desire for chanting. Because of this, of the various places that I have visited, Siddha Bakula has a special corner in my heart!

I pray to get constant remembrance of Siddha Bakula and Haridas Thakur.

May my mind dwell,
In courtyards of Siddha Bakula tree.
Get intoxicated, chanting holy names,
Relish transcendental drinking spree.

May I pass time,
Chanting and hearing Nama, lost in serenity.
May I sing, dance and swoon,
Oblivious to world. Let them call it absurdity.

May my heart, become clean and pure,
Contamination accumulated may disappear.
May I serve the Lord, Srila Prabhupad,
And his mission, dedicated and sincere.

May I get the mercy of
Thakur Haridas... one fine day.
And Hare Krishna Nami, Jagannath Swami,
Nayan Patha Gami Bhavatu me.

Kaun Banega Arjuna?

 Last month, a major gang-rape–cum-assault incident in the nation’s capital instigated a huge uproar throughout the nation. The victim, eventually, succumbed to her injuries on December 29, after struggling for 13 days.
Srimad Bhagavatam explains that amongst the four pillars of religion – truthfulness, austerity, cleanliness and mercy – the last three are already extinct in this age of Kali-Yuga. Only the principle of truthfulness continues to survive in some tiny proportion; though, even that is on a gradual decline. This fact was highlighted in this recent incident, when our society could not tolerate such a gross violation of law and order of country of India, which brags "Satyameva Jayate" (Truth Alone Prevails) as its national motto.  When a woman, Draupadi, was forced to strip off her clothes, Lord Krishna felt the necessity to wage a war. And the famous Mahabharata war ensued. Unfortunately, in the same India,  24,206 rape cases were reported in 2011 (what to speak of unreported cases!). Although the public is demanding stronger laws to prevent such acts, this will only result in a superficial treatment of such problems, unless the root cause of the problem – our polluted hearts – are treated. Such incidents like rape are just an external manifestation of our internal disease of boiling lust. In fact, we see striking similarities between the setting scene of the Mahabharata war and the current scene of world, which calls for a Mahabharata-like war to be fought against the enemy of lust.
In the Mahabharata war, the Kauravas were the antagonists, representing irreligion; while, the Pandavas were the protagonists, battling to uphold the righteous principles. In the modern setting, the enemy is the lower nature of one’s own self; and battling with it is a higher nature, which wants to abide by righteous principles.
Before the war, it was the unholy counseling of people like Shakuni and Kaliraj, which prompted Duryodhana and his associates to go to extent of attempting to strip off Draupadi. Similarly, in the modern setting, the media, cinema and TV offer the unholy counseling by facilitating widespread propaganda of ideas like free sex, hedonism, consumerism, etc.
It was Dhritarashtra, whose duty was to restrain the Kauravas and guide them on the right path. On account of selfish interests, however, he failed to do so. At the same time, wise people like Bhisma and Dronacharya kept mum against the atrocities of Duryodhana and his associates, which gave way for the evil deeds of Duryodhana to thrive without any guilt. Similarly, the modern governors, who are supposed to restrain the unholy forces, have failed to do so, because of their own political and selfish interests. At the same time, a handful of wise people, who have the right knowledge and are free from personal interests, have shut their mouths to bury themselves safely in their comfort zones.
Just like Arjuna – the hero of the Mahabharata war – was bewildered and unwilling to fight in the war against his own kith and kin, because of his intense attachment with them; similarly, the common man, who is in the same situation as Arjuna, due to excessive attachment, is unwilling to fight in the war against the enemy of one’s lower nature, which precipitates in the form of lust and greed in one’s heart.
Just as Krishna – the Lord and universal guru – made Himself available to both parties; but, it was the Pandavas, who took His help and emerged victorious. Similarly, it is the spiritual master, who is coming in the same line of succession from the Lord, in the parampara system, and who is as good as the Lord, making himself available to everyone out of his mercy; but, there are very few people willing to benefit from him.
In the battle of Mahabharata, Lord Krishna, who was the incarnation for that age, instructed Arjuna to fight. And when Arjuna was hesitant about success, Krishna assured Arjuna that he will be victorious just by becoming an instrument. Similarly, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who is yugavatar for this age, instructed to fight against one’s lower nature and help others in doing so. He proclaimed,
bhärata-bhümite haila manuñya-janma yära
janma särthaka kari' kara para-upakära
It translates as “One who has taken his birth as a human being in the land of India [Bhärata-varña] should make his life successful and work for the benefit of all other people." Lord Chaitanya also assures of the success –
prithivite ache jato nagaradi gram,
sarvatra prachara hoibe mora nam
which means, Lord's holy name will be chanted in the nook and corners of this world. Since Lord is the personification of religion and His names are non-different from Him, this statement of the Lord assures victory of righteousness in the battle against evil. Few people might have longed (At least in fantasy) to be in the position of Arjuna, as in the historic battle of Mahabharata, directly carrying out the instructions of the Lord in the middle of a raging war. The same opportunity is as well available to each one of us, to be like Arjuna, with help from the Lord and His bonafide representatives, to wage the war against the enemies in our own heart and help others. And one cannot escape this battle. If he takes the side of the Lord, emulating Arjuna, his higher nature wins the battle; otherwise, one obviously falls prey to the lower nature emulating Duryodhana.
So, are you ready to be the Arjuna?
